From a modest starting group of just 24 bandicoots three years ago, our recovery program at Tiverton Sanctuary has witnessed a population explosion to approximately 4,000 bandicoots as of the end of 2024. This is the highest number since the program's inception, a clear indication of the positive impact of sustained conservation efforts.
This collaborative effort, together with the National Recovery Team, has led to the down-listing of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot from 'extinct in the wild' to 'endangered'. This marks a significant step forward in the conservation of a species that was once on the brink of extinction.
